Fujifilm bullish on multiple fronts from medium format to consumer instant print cameras
Fujifilm is unique. It’s at the heart of the digital photography revolution but it’s also one of the big name survivors of the film era. It’s what Kodak failed to achieve. Fujifilm always have a lot of positive messages at Photokina and this year is no exception.
The breadth of their talent is remarkable, from lucrative medical imaging systems to high end medium format digital cameras, sensor design, all the way to mass market instant print cameras. Fujifilm still makes film and they even launched a new colour silver halide photo paper today. So lets look at their Photokina 2018 news as it was rolled out to the press:
Shigetaka Komori, Fujifilm’s chairman and CEO kicked off a very bullish Photokina press conference for his company
Fujifilm tells us that they are only one of two lens manufacturers that can make extreme telephoto 8K broadcast camera zoom lenses with massive lens elements like this.
We were also given a quick reminder of the XF 200mm f/2 launched a couple of months ago.
The third of three new lenses from Fujifilm for the X-Pro system is also the widest zoom lens yet with an f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, the XF 8-16mm (12-24) f/2.8
Another of three new X-Pro system lenses announced at Photokina by Fujifilm is the XF 16-80mmm f/4 (24-120) – thiugh have you spotted the mistake on the slide?
X-Pro users will soon be able to use a 33mm (50mmm full frame equivalent) f/1 standard lens, the XF 33mm f/1
Fujifilm suggest their medium format sensor should be called Super Full Frame
GFX 50R compact rangefinder-style medium format mirrorless camera
Fujifilm launched a new rangefinder-style compact version of its GFX medium format mirrorless camera
The new GFX50R was shown next to one of Fujifilm’s medium format rangefinder film cameras from the early 90s, we think it’s a Fuji GW690III 6x9cm format example.

The new GF 50mm f/3.5 This is probably as close as you can get to a pancake lens for a medium format digital camera!
A 50mm f/3.5 GF lens (39.5mm full frame equivalent) is coming next year
Also in the pipeline for next year and 2020, respectively, are the GF 100-200mm f/5.6 (79-158) and the GF 45-150mm f/4 (35.6-79)
Fujifilm drew applause when it announced that it was teaming up with Phase One to offer versions of its popular Capture One image workkflow software tailored for Fujifilm camera users
The three-digit number says it all
The new 100 megapixel Fujifilm GFX ultra high resolution medium format camera
Fujifilm’s expanded medium format mirrorless digital camera range
Silver halide colour photo paper isn’t going away any time soon with the launch of Fujicolor Crystal Archive Maxima
Fujifilm has revised its sales forecast for its Instax instant print cameras upwards to 10 million for 2018
You can now do even more with the Instax SQ20
Fujifilm has added new colours to the Instax Square SQ20 range.
While Fujifilm’s Instax instant print camera sales go from strength to strength, the company has signed up pop megastar, Taylor Swift, to promote the brand
Fujifilm’s Ultra Short Throw projector has an unusual articulating wide angle projection lens.
Fujifilm’s entry into the projector market is not small but light enough to be carried and waved around at journalists
Finally from the Fujifilm press conference, a baffling slogan that had us scratching our heads:
So far this is the most obscure slogan encountered at Photokina 2018!
